What is Charnwood Forest School?


Charnwood Forest School provides regular stay and play sessions. Parents/carers bring their children to a weekly session in the gardens/woodland at Whatton Gardens. The session runs for 1.5 hours each week term time only. Along with the stay and play sessions we also provide a Family Fun Day once a month on the first Sunday of the month, and offer children's birthday parties too.




Where do the sessions take place?


There are currently three sessions a week. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Whatton Gardens. All sessions start at 10.30am and end at 12.00pm. The Whatton Garden session takes place in the amazing gardens of Whatton House, you can access the entrance on the A6 between Kegworth and Hathern. Anyone that books on will be sent the diections and map of the parking.




What is a typical session at Forest School?


When you first arrive you will need to sign in so that we know who is onsite during the session. We start at 10.30am by gathering around the fire circle to introduce the session. Each session is loosley planned around a book, event or interest of the children. Hot and cold drinks and a snack are available during this time, and throughout the session for you to help yourself to. We will sing songs, play a game before going off to start the activties discussed around the circle. There will also be other resources availble during the session for the children to access - muddy kitchen, mark making equipment, cosy book area etc.




What activities can I expect?


The list is endless - den building, bug hunts, colour hunts, bear hunts, exploring nature, natural crowns and bracelets, natural painting, making bug homes, bird watching, litter picking, making bird feeders, journey sticks, clay faces etc. etc.




How much does each session cost?


Costs - Stay and Play session - £6 per child Pre-walkers with a paying sibling are free Sibling discount 20% (please email me for details) Family Fun session - £6 per child Birthday parties (minimum of 10 children) £10 each child




What do I need to bring?


As we are an all weather, all year round stay and play group, your child will need appropriate clothing, and as you know the weather can be unpredictable! We suggest for all sessions: Long trousers and long sleeve tops are highly recommended to protect their legs and arms. An all in one waterproof Wellies / walking boots / sturdy shoes Then, depending on the weather: Sunhat Suncream Extra layers Hat Gloves Warm socks




What happens if it rains?


The stay and play session will go ahead in all weather apart from in high winds and thunder storms. The children love it when it rains - muddy puddles everywhere is always lots of fun!! It is only 1.5 hours then you can get home and dry off!! If a session is cancelled I will contact all families booked onto the session, and also post it on social media.




How can I book a session?

What policies do you have in place?


I have a handbook with all of the policies and procedures in place. This will be taken to each stay and play session for parents to look through as and when needed.




What qualifications/training do you have?


I am a qualified Forest School Leader, with an Education Studies degree and I am also an Early Years Teacher. I have up to date Safeguarding Children, First Aid and Food Hygiene training. These are kept up to date as and when needed.




Can I still come if my child has an allergy or an intolerance?


Please add all details of any known allergies or intolerences to the form when booking. .




Can I just turn up on the day?


Numbers are limited so booking online is essential to ensure there are not too many people in the area.




Are the Forest School sites pushchair friendly?


It is pushchair friendly, but can get very muddy when it rains and be bumpy in places. Most bring a baby carrier for younger siblings.




Is there toilet and nappy changing facilities?


Yes, we have a nappy changing tent, and also a camping style toilet inside another small tent for children and adult to use if needed.
